Hardwoods or softwoods
All woods are called either “hardwood” or “softwood”. “Hardwood” means that the tree is a broad-leaved deciduous tree. These trees lose their leaves in the fall. Some examples of hardwood trees are oak, beech, maple, etc. Do not be fooled though, some hardwood trees still have very soft wood. For example, balsa wood is classified as a hardwood but tends to be quite soft. “Softwood” means that the wood comes from a coniferous tree. These trees have needles instead of leaves and drop cones to reproduce. Examples of hardwood trees include pine and spruce. Some softwoods can also be very hard so you need to be careful in classifying the woods, just remember that trees that lose leaves in the fall are hardwood trees and trees that have needles and stay green in the winter are hardwoods. Make sure to watch out because some trees with needles lose their needles in the winter and are still classified as softwoods.
